What benefits does a mattress topper provide?

A good mattress topper can significantly improve your sleep comfort and at the same time extend the life of the bed. At HOME-TEX.com you will find a large selection of mattress toppers from reputable brands such as SLEEP TECH, Borg Living and Zen Sleep. We offer mattress toppers for all bed types, including single beds, one-and-a-half beds and double beds.

The mattress topper makes up the bed's top comfort layer and allows you to adjust the sleeping surface without replacing the entire bed. If the mattress feels too firm, the right mattress topper can create a softer and more yielding surface. If you prefer a more resilient comfort, you can choose a topper that provides more resistance and makes it easier to move.

A mattress topper can also create a more even sleeping surface. If you have a double bed consisting of two separate mattresses, a large single topper can reduce the feeling of the middle seam. This gives a more cohesive surface and better use of the full bed width.

At the same time, the mattress topper protects the mattress underneath from some of the daily wear, such as moisture, sweat and movement that wear on the bed's materials over time; with a topper, a larger part of the wear is concentrated in the top layer. The topper is far easier and cheaper to replace than the entire bed and can therefore help extend the bed's lifespan.

It is important, however, that the mattress underneath still provides the necessary support for the body. A topper can make a firm mattress more yielding, but it cannot fundamentally make a mattress that is too soft or sagging become firm again. If the mattress has obvious depressions or no longer supports the body, you should consider replacing the mattress itself.

When you choose a new bed, we therefore generally recommend choosing a bed that feels slightly too firm rather than too soft, unless a soft bed is preferred. A firm bed can subsequently be adjusted more easily with a soft topper, whereas a firm topper cannot fully prevent a soft bed from sinking somewhat under body weight.

Which material should you choose for your mattress topper?

Memory foam mattress topper

Memory foam is for those who want a softer, shaping and more enveloping sleeping surface. The material reacts to body heat and weight and provides relief especially around the shoulders, lumbar and hips.

When you lie on memory foam, the surface molds to the body's pressure. This can give the shoulders and hips more space to sink and distribute pressure over a larger part of the body. Memory foam is therefore particularly relevant if your bed feels too firm or if you sleep on your side and want a more yielding surface.

Memory foam is ideal if you prefer to lie somewhat into the topper rather than on top of it and do not mind that it may feel warmer because more of the body is enveloped.

The material is also affected by the bedroom temperature. In a very cold room, memory foam will feel firmer until it is warmed by the body. In a warm room it becomes softer and more formable more quickly.

Latex mattress topper

Latex is a good choice if you want a more springy and elastic surface. The material yields under the body but reacts faster than memory foam and returns to its original shape when you move.

On a latex topper you will typically feel like you are lying more on top of the mattress. This makes it easier to turn during the night and gives a more lively sleeping surface with noticeable resistance.

Latex is therefore an obvious choice if you prefer firmer comfort, frequently change sleeping positions, or do not like sinking far into the topper.

The material also has good ventilating properties. Latex cores are often designed with small holes that allow air to move through the material. This makes latex particularly relevant if you tend to get warm at night.

Latex is, however, heavier than both memory foam and polyurethane foam. For larger sizes the topper can therefore be more demanding to lift and handle when changing sheets or turning the topper.

Polyurethane foam mattress topper

Polyurethane foam is a simple and cost-effective solution that is advantageous if the bed already has the right comfort and you therefore do not wish to change the sleeping experience significantly.

A polyurethane foam topper provides an extra layer between the body and the mattress. It can be relevant if you do not want to lie directly on a spring mattress, if you want to extend the bed's life, or if you simply want to create a more even surface on a bed with two separate mattresses.

Polyurethane foam is easy to handle and is therefore also suitable for guest rooms or summer houses. If you want a noticeable change in the bed's comfort, you should choose memory foam or latex instead.

Find the right size and height

The mattress topper should as a rule have the same length and width as the mattress underneath. A topper that fits the bed precisely lies more evenly and is easier to keep in place.

For a single bed you should choose:

  • 80x200 cm
  • 90x200 cm

For a one-and-a-half bed you should choose:

  • 120x200 cm
  • 140x200 cm

For a double bed you should choose:

  • 160x200 cm
  • 180x200 cm

If your double bed has two separate mattresses, you can choose one large topper that covers the seam in the middle and creates a more uniform sleeping surface. You can also choose two separate toppers if you have different preferences for material or comfort.

For adjustable beds there are toppers with two split types. The opening makes it possible to raise one or both sides of the bed without the topper counteracting the bed's movement. It is important to choose a model with the split type that matches the bed's construction, depending on whether it is H-split or U-split.

The topper's height affects how substantial a comfort layer you get, and we offer toppers in heights from 3 to 14 cm.

A topper of 3 to 5 cm is suitable if you are already satisfied with the mattress's current support and only want a light comfort layer. It can also be sufficient if you primarily want to protect the mattress or create a more even surface.

A topper of 6 to 8 cm gives a more substantial comfort layer and will usually change the sleeping experience more noticeably. The extra material provides more room for the topper to shape to the body and distribute pressure.

Toppers of 9 to 14 cm provide a marked extra comfort layer. They can be relevant if you want a larger change of the bed's surface or more distance from the mattress underneath. Be aware, however, that a tall topper makes the bed higher and can be heavier to handle.

If you compare two toppers in the same material and quality where one is 5 cm high and the other 8 cm, the 8 cm model will have more material to absorb the body's pressure. The more the topper is loaded, the more important sufficient height can be so that the material is not completely compressed and the mattress underneath becomes noticeable.

If the topper is subjected to less load, the body will typically not sink as far into the material. Here a lower topper can therefore well provide the desired comfort. The right height therefore depends on how much the topper is loaded, how the bed is constructed, and the sleeping sensation you prefer.

What do comfort zones and core quality mean?

When you compare toppers, you will often encounter information about comfort zones and core quality. Both affect how the topper reacts under the body.

Core quality is measured in kg/m³ and indicates how dense the foam is. A core quality of 50 kg/m³ means that one cubic meter of the foam weighs 50 kg. The higher the number, the more foam material and less air the core generally contains.

A topper with a core quality of 50 kg/m³ has a medium firmness and suits many needs. A topper with a core quality above 50 kg/m³ has a denser core and will normally feel firmer.

Core quality should primarily be used to compare toppers of the same material. Memory foam, latex and polyurethane foam react differently under the body and cannot therefore be directly compared by the same number.

Comfort zones in a topper mean that the core has areas with different support and yield. The body does not load the topper evenly from head to toe, and the zones help the topper accommodate the body's different shapes. Shoulders and hips are among the body's widest points. Here the body needs more room to sink so it can find a natural and comfortable position. The areas around the shoulders and hips are therefore often more yielding. Around the waist, back and legs the topper can provide more support. This means the body does not sink equally across the entire sleeping surface.

A topper with seven zones is therefore divided into seven areas that react differently under the body. The topper does not consist of seven different materials. It is the same core shaped to give more yield in some places and more support in others.

How to wash and maintain your mattress topper

Proper maintenance can help the topper keep its shape and comfort longer.

Many toppers have a removable cover, and the washing instructions may state that the cover may be washed. As a rule, however, we recommend that you avoid washing it.

On the inside of the cover there is often a quilted layer that can shrink or change shape during washing and spinning. This can subsequently make it difficult to get the cover correctly back around the topper's core. This applies regardless of whether the core consists of memory foam, latex or polyurethane foam.

If it is necessary to wash the cover, you should follow the washing instructions carefully and choose a gentle spin of at most 800 rpm. The cover will be very wet when it comes out of the machine, but the low spin is necessary and reduces the risk of shrinkage.

After washing, the cover must be air-dried completely. Avoid tumble drying, as the heat can also increase the risk of shrinkage. The foam core itself must not be washed or soaked, as the foam can retain moisture and be difficult to get completely dry again.

You can extend the topper's life by maintaining it correctly in everyday use. One of the most important things is to rotate it regularly so that head and foot ends swap places. In this way the load is distributed more evenly and wear does not concentrate in the same places.

If your topper can be used on both sides, it can also be flipped. Be aware, however, that some models have a specific top side or a non-slip underside that reduces the risk of the topper moving. These models should therefore only be rotated and not flipped. Always follow the instructions for the specific model.

In a double bed it can also be an advantage to rotate the topper so you swap sides. This can even out differences in body weight and sleeping position so that the same part of the topper is not always most loaded.

To ensure a healthy sleeping environment it is also a good idea to let the bed stand without a bedspread or duvet and pillow for a while in the morning. This gives heat and moisture a chance to evaporate so the topper stays fresh longer.

Protect the topper with a mattress protector and topper fitted sheet

The most practical way to protect the topper is to place a mattress protector on top and finish with a topper fitted sheet.

The mattress protector is placed between the topper and the sheet. It therefore lies close to the body and absorbs some of the moisture and sweat that would otherwise penetrate the topper's cover and core. The advantage of a mattress protector is that it is easier to remove and wash than the topper's cover. When the mattress protector eventually becomes worn or discolored, it is also much cheaper to replace than a complete topper.

A mattress protector in cotton also provides an absorbent natural material between the body and the topper. This can be an advantage if the topper's core consists of memory foam or polyurethane foam.

As a finishing touch we recommend a topper fitted sheet. The topper fitted sheet is made to sit tightly around the topper's edges and corners and does not need to reach down around the rest of the bed. The snug fit gives a smooth sleeping surface with less loose fabric. It also helps the sheet stay in place so you do not constantly have to straighten it or pull it back over the corners.

If you have an adjustable bed, you should choose a sheet with the same type of H-split or U-split as the topper. This way the bed's different parts can still be raised and lowered without the sheet restricting movement.

With the right combination of topper, mattress protector and topper fitted sheet you get a comfortable and well-protected sleeping surface that is easier to keep clean and neat.
