If you use it together with the interactive 33971 Locomotive with sound recorder (not included), it can tell whether the safety barriers are open or closed. If they are up, the locomotive will stop and warn others of its arrival. Once the barriers are down, the train automatically signals its departure and carefully continues its journey as it crosses the unstable rails.
