On a double bed with two separate mattresses, a single, unified mattress topper can create a more even sleeping surface and make the transition in the middle less noticeable. This gives better opportunity to use the full width of the bed.
A mattress topper can adjust the feel of the bed's top layer, but it cannot replace the fundamental support from the mattresses underneath. If the bed has become very soft, uneven or has clear depressions, the mattresses themselves should be assessed before you invest in a new mattress topper.
It is easier to make a firm bed more yielding with a soft mattress topper than to make a bed that is too soft firmer. A firm mattress topper can change the surface feel, but the mattress underneath will still compress under the body's weight.

A mattress topper in 180x200 cm is the obvious choice for large double beds where extra comfort and support are desired. Whether you choose a mattress topper in memory foam, latex or polyurethane foam, you get a solution that adapts to body movements, improves sleeping comfort and reduces pressure points. If you have different preferences for sleeping comfort, two separate mattress toppers at 90x200 cm can be an alternative. This allows you to choose different materials or firmness on each side of the bed. The drawback is that the transition in the middle becomes more noticeable than with a single, unified 180x200 mattress topper.
If you have an adjustable bed it is important that the topper's split matches the bed's function. A U-split has an opening at the head end so that the two head sections can be raised independently while the topper remains joined at the foot end. An H-split has openings at both the head and foot ends. This provides greater freedom of movement and makes it possible to adjust both the head and foot ends on each side of the bed without affecting the other side.
Which material should you choose?
The core of the mattress topper determines how it responds under the body. Therefore you should choose the material based on the sleeping experience you want.
Mattress topper 180x200 with memory foam
Memory foam reacts to body heat and pressure and molds around the body. The material gives the most sink where the largest pressure is on the topper, for example the shoulders and hips.
This gives a close and enveloping sleeping experience where you sink further into the surface. Memory foam can therefore be relevant if your current bed feels too firm or if you prefer that the topper follows the body's shape.
Memory foam reacts to body heat and pressure. The material will therefore also feel firmer in a cold bedroom until it reaches body temperature. It then adapts to the body's shape and pressure points.
Mattress topper 180x200 with latex
Latex provides a springy surface that quickly regains shape when you move. You will therefore normally feel like you lie more on top of the topper than in it, in contrast to memory foam.
The material's quick response makes it easier to change sleeping position. Latex cores also often have small ventilation holes that allow air to move through the material.
Latex is heavier than both polyurethane foam and memory foam. For a 180x200 cm mattress topper it can therefore be an advantage to be two people when it needs to be lifted, turned or moved.

Polyurethane foam provides a simple extra layer over the mattresses without changing the sleeping experience as markedly as memory foam or latex.
It can be the right choice if you are already satisfied with the bed's comfort but want some distance from the mattresses or springs underneath. Polyurethane foam is also often a good and cost-effective alternative for a guest room or summer house mattress.
Choose the right height for your 180x200 mattress topper
The height of the mattress topper tells you how much material there is between the body and the mattresses underneath.
A mattress topper of 3 to 5 cm provides a lighter comfort layer and fits well if the bed already has the desired support. A model of 6 to 8 cm gives the body more material to sink into and will therefore normally have a more noticeable influence on the sleeping experience.
If you compare two identical mattress toppers of 5 and 8 cm respectively, it is not the firmness of the material itself that changes. The difference is that the taller model has more material to absorb the body's load.
How much height you need depends, among other things, on how much the foam is compressed when you lie on the topper. When the body sinks further into the material, the mattress underneath can be felt through a low model more quickly. A higher mattress topper contains more material and therefore provides a stronger comfort layer before the underlying support can be felt.
How far the body sinks varies from person to person and depends both on body shape, sleeping position and the topper's material. The same mattress topper can therefore be experienced differently depending on who uses it. A tall model is not automatically the best choice for everyone but can be an advantage if a more pronounced comfort layer and more material between the body and the mattress underneath are desired.
On a double bed two people can experience the same mattress topper differently. The choice should therefore take into account both persons' body shapes and the comfort you prefer together.
Comfort zones and core quality
Comfort zones mean that the topper's core does not give the same way across the entire sleeping surface. The areas are designed to react differently under different parts of the body.
At the shoulders and hips the topper is often more yielding because the body's widest points need more room to sink in. Around the waist, back and legs the core can give more resistance so the body does not sink equally across the whole surface.
A mattress topper with seven comfort zones does not consist of seven different materials. The zones are typically created through cuts or patterns in the same core, which change how easily the material yields.
Core quality is measured in kg/m³ and describes how much one cubic meter of the foam weighs. A value of 50 kg/m³ therefore means that one cubic meter of the given foam weighs 50 kg.
A higher number generally means that the core contains more foam material and less air. This can give a denser core, but core quality should primarily be used to compare mattress toppers of the same foam type.
Latex, memory foam and polyurethane foam have different properties and therefore cannot be directly compared based on core quality alone.
Washing and maintenance of the mattress topper
Although the cover of a mattress topper can be removable and indicated as washable, we generally recommend that you avoid washing it. The cover often has a quilted layer on the inside that can shrink or change shape during washing.
On a 180x200 cm cover even a small change in shape can make it difficult to get the cover back correctly around the large core.
If washing is necessary, the product's washing instructions must always be followed carefully. Choose a gentle spin at a maximum of 800 rpm. The cover will be very wet after washing, but the low spin reduces the risk of shrinkage.
The cover must then be air-dried completely. The foam core itself must not be washed or soaked, as the foam can absorb moisture and be difficult to get completely dry again.
We recommend that you rotate the mattress topper regularly so that the head and foot ends swap places. On a double bed this also means that you will lie on the opposite half of the topper. This helps to distribute the load over a larger part of the core.
If the mattress topper is designed for two-sided use, it can also be flipped. Models with a specific top side or non-slip material on the underside should normally only be rotated. Always follow the information on the specific mattress topper.
Remember the mattress protector
It is important to use a mattress protector on top of your mattress topper to best protect the mattress against moisture from, for example, sweat. In this way you also maintain the most hygienic sleeping environment, since a mattress protector can easily be removed and washed in the washing machine like your other bed linen.
We recommend that you always use the mattress protector as the next top layer in your bed, directly under the sheet, regardless of which mattress, mattress topper or bed you own. It is best for your mattress and the most hygienic for you. You may prefer a mattress protector in cotton, as the material is breathable and contributes to a comfortable sleeping environment.
For a bed and mattress topper of 180x200 cm the mattress protector should also be 180x200 cm, so it covers the entire sleeping surface without creating unnecessary folds.
Also choose a topper fitted sheet in 180x200 cm. The topper fitted sheet is made to fit snugly around the mattress topper's corners and you should therefore always take into account length, width and height when you choose your new sheet.
For an adjustable bed the topper fitted sheet must have the same H-split or U-split as the mattress topper. That way the sheet follows the bed's movements when one or both sides are raised.
