Mattress Topper Guide

What is a mattress topper?

A topper fitted sheet is a mattress between 5-10 cm thick that lies on top of the bed - it is also often referred to as the comfort mattress. A topper fitted sheet is used on top of the primary mattress, also called the core mattress, and must not be confused with a mattress protector. The purpose of the topper fitted sheet is sleeping comfort, and depending on type and firmness, it should ensure the body an ergonomically correct and relaxing sleeping position. A topper fitted sheet also helps protect the bed itself from wear and tear, and is usually replaced every 5 to 7 years. This way, you can make your bed last many years by remembering to change the topper fitted sheet so your bed always has optimal comfort and support, and is adapted to your current needs.

Which mattress topper should you choose?

When investing in a new topper fitted sheet, it is important to know your needs. For example, you should consider whether you prefer to lie on a soft or firmer surface. Likewise, it can be crucial for your sleeping comfort whether you choose a ventilating latex mattress or a pressure-relieving topper fitted sheet with memory foam.

Mattress topper with memory foam

Memory foam is an active foam that uses the body and room heat to shape itself and provide a unique relief. The fantastic property of a topper fitted sheet with memory foam is that it molds to the body's pressure points and relieves muscles and joints. This means that with a memory foam topper fitted sheet, you achieve a special active support and a flexible topper fitted sheet, even if you turn in bed or sleep in different positions. This property is preferred by many as it typically results in a much calmer and more stable night's sleep. If you often wake up with body soreness, a topper fitted sheet with memory foam can be a good option.

With a memory foam topper fitted sheet, you should be aware that it is affected by room temperature. This means that if you sleep in a very cold room, the topper fitted sheet will feel firmer. Conversely, if you sleep in a warm or cozy room, the mattress will feel softer and usually also warmer. However, you can somewhat regulate the warmth in the mattress by adjusting your other elements, such as your duvet or your mattress protector. It is recommended to use a mattress protector made of pure cotton, silk, or from Temprakon on top, both to protect the mattress while still maintaining the effect of the topper fitted sheet's properties.

Mattress topper with latex

Latex is a rubber material extracted from a tree. It is an extract used to make natural latex, which is then used for mattresses, shoes, and other products with latex/rubber. Therefore, you can get latex topper fitted sheets that are more natural than other foam types.
Latex topper fitted sheets will feel firmer than other types and mold to your body differently than memory foam does. This topper fitted sheet will instead provide support to your body in a way that feels like it does not give in but holds you up.

Latex topper fitted sheets have a particular advantage that has more than one significance for the mattress and comfort. The latex topper fitted sheet is perforated, meaning holes are made through the mattress. These holes help adjust 1. firmness and 2. breathability. The size and number of holes adjust how firm the mattress is and have a significant effect on how much heat can pass through the mattress. This makes latex mattresses much more breathable than other foam types. All this makes latex topper fitted sheets ideal if you want a more temperature-regulated night's sleep.
