What are Ready-Made Curtains?

Ready-made curtains usually come in packages of one panel. When talking about curtain panels, it is typical to use two panels for a window. This way, you can gather your curtains in the middle of the window and achieve a really nice solution with beautiful pleats (commonly referred to as 'folds' or 'waves').

Material

Most curtains are made of polyester. This material can have many different appearances because it can be processed in many ways and combined with different weaving techniques. However, polyester is a very strong material, which also withstands more than other textile types and is cheaper to produce. Polyester is also used for clothing, bedding, furniture, and much more.

Curtain Sizes and Usage?

The most common curtain sizes are 145 cm in width, which is almost always standard, it can vary by 10 cm, depending on where you buy your curtain. This does not necessarily mean that you can use the full width of the curtain, as there needs to be fabric for the curtain to fall nicely in fine pleats/folds (what it is called when the curtain 'waves'). That is why curtains are discussed in panels, one panel corresponds to one side of the window. So unless your window is very small, it is recommended to buy two curtain panels for a window.

Curtain Lengths

The length of curtains is another matter, as it varies greatly how people want their curtains to be mounted. Some want curtains just over the window sill, others want them from just above the window to the floor or even from ceiling to floor. Especially long curtains have become popular in recent years, as they can also function as insulation and provide a very modern look with a bohemian and soft aesthetic expression.
Common curtain sizes:
  • 145x175 cm – From the top of the window to below the window sill
  • 145x245 cm – From the top of the window to the floor or baseboard
  • 145x300 cm – Often fits from ceiling to floor (always measure before)

How Do I Measure Correctly for the Curtain?

First, it is important to determine how you want your ready-made curtains to be mounted in your window. Should they hang outside the frame or do you want them inside the frame?
Then it is just a matter of measuring the area you want the curtain to cover, height and width. Most curtains you buy are too long in height, and you will therefore need to adjust the curtain's height to your window.

Choose the Right Curtain – Curtain Types (Ready-Made Curtains)

Thin Curtains

The very thin and light curtains are typically very good for screening areas where you still want daylight, but just want to block a little of the sun's rays. Available in a multitude of colors and designs, typically in lighter shades.

Thick Curtains

Thick curtains, also called heavy curtains, block more light and provide more shade from both the sun's rays, they also have the advantage of retaining some of the heat inside and keeping some of the heat out. These come in many different appearances.

Blackout Curtains

Very heavy curtains, which ensure that no light can pass through the material, and are therefore also called blackout curtains. This type of curtain comes in many colors and designs.

Hanging – Mounting Options

There are several ways to hang curtains. The key is that the curtain and the rod must match in method.
Pleat tape (insert image): Used to hang curtains with, for example, nylon hooks (also just called hooks), or rings with hooks. The pleat tape can also have loops or pockets that allow the curtain to be mounted directly on a curtain rod.

Hemming and Adjusting Your Ready-Made Curtain – Fusible Hemming Tape

Curtains can be hemmed and adjusted in height, so they easily fit your windows. There are two common methods for hemming curtains:
  1. By hemming the curtain with a seam (sewing)
  2. By hemming the curtain with hemming tape (ironing)
It may sound too easy, but it is actually easy to adjust your curtain in length today. Especially if you choose method 2. All you need is a measuring tape, scissors (if you need to shorten a lot), hemming tape, a tea towel, and an iron. If you are unsure how to do it, there are many videos online with good explanations and tips on how it is easiest. Remember that when you adjust your curtain, make sure to cut it 5-6 cm too long, so you have a nice hem edge you can fold and iron together.

Washing and Maintenance

Always read the washing instructions on the product you have purchased. Washing and maintenance can vary greatly, depending on the material and weaving.
