Weighted Blanket Guide

Weighted Blankets

Weighted blankets, ball blankets, weighted blankets and hybrid blankets – all names for blankets with a higher weight and density than regular blankets.
Each weighted blanket can be composed or produced differently – but most are made with fiberfill and glass beads. The glass beads are essential in the blankets and are what create the main purpose of the blankets.
Additionally, you can find weighted blankets with different types of covers (also called shells), each providing the blanket with something different, for example, there are weighted blankets with bamboo, cotton, or polyester covers.

What Does the Weight Do – Why Choose a Weighted Blanket?

  • Reduces Stress and Anxiety: The gentle pressure from the weighted blanket can stimulate the production of serotonin and melatonin, hormones associated with relaxation and sleep. At the same time, the weighted blanket helps your body relax by reducing the production of cortisol, the body's stress hormone.
  • Improves Sleep Quality: Many find that they fall asleep faster, sleep more calmly and uninterrupted with a weighted blanket - which can improve overall sleep quality.
  • Creates a Sense of Security: The constant pressure of the weighted blanket can give a feeling of being hugged or embraced, which can promote a sense of security and well-being.

The blanket should not be used by individuals with low body weight or pregnant women. The blanket must not be used by children under 3 years old.

Recommended Weight for Your Weighted Blanket:

To achieve the optimal effect of the blanket, you should generally choose a blanket that is approximately 10% of your total body weight. If you have no experience with this type of blanket before, or for example, experience difficulties turning in bed, it may be advantageous to choose a ball blanket with slightly less filling than 10%. It may also take some time for the body to get used to sleeping with a ball blanket or weighted blanket, some experience the effect and calmness immediately, others experience it only after some time and have needed to increase or decrease the weight.

Example:

  • Individuals: 40-60 kg = approx. 5 kg weighted blanket
  • Individuals: 60-80 kg = approx. 7 kg weighted blanket
  • Individuals: 80-100 kg = approx. 9 kg weighted blanket

Most weighted blankets are also produced in extra length, 140x220 cm, where 10% is added to the blanket's weight, so you have the same weight distribution as in blankets with regular length. You can therefore easily switch your regular blanket to a weighted blanket.

Children's Weighted Blankets:

Weighted blankets for children are a slightly different starting point and are often used in different contexts than for adults. Typically, the blankets are used by children with diagnoses, but we always recommend consulting with a doctor. However, there is a significant positive effect of the calmness from weighted blankets and children's sleep patterns.
Note that weighted blankets must not be used by children under 3 years old.
The weight of weighted blankets for children should always be a maximum of 10% of body weight – it is also recommended to gradually increase to the maximum weight. It is important for children to be able to move freely and turn in bed.
